More Than a Race: My NASCAR Weekend Experience
At the beginning of 2026, I set a few personal goals for myself.
Two of those goals were simple: spend more quality time with my parents and travel to places I hadn't experienced before.
This past weekend, a NASCAR race (two actually) helped me accomplish both.
When most people think about travel, they picture beaches, theme parks, cruises, or famous landmarks. While I enjoy all of those types of trips, I've recently found myself appreciating another form of travel: sports travel.
This weekend reminded me exactly why.
What started as a trip centered around NASCAR quickly became much more than just a race. It became an opportunity to explore a new destination, experience something different, and spend meaningful time with family away from our normal routines.
One of the things that immediately stood out was the atmosphere. The excitement surrounding the event was contagious. Fans from all different backgrounds came together to share a common passion. Whether someone had followed NASCAR for decades or was attending their first race weekend, there was a sense of community that made the experience special.
Of course, the racing itself was exciting. The sights, sounds, and energy of being at the track are difficult to fully capture unless you've experienced it in person. Television does a great job of showing the competition, but being there allows you to feel the atmosphere, hear the engines, and appreciate the scale of the event in a completely different way.
What surprised me most, however, was how much of the trip's value came from everything surrounding the race.
Some of my favorite memories weren't tied to a particular lap, driver, or result. They came from the conversations, the shared experiences, the travel itself, and the opportunity to spend uninterrupted time with my parents.
As we get older, those opportunities can become harder to find. Work, responsibilities, and busy schedules often take priority. Travel has a unique way of slowing things down and creating space for meaningful moments, and this weekend served as a great reminder of that.
The experience also reinforced something I've come to believe about sports travel. The event may be the reason you book the trip, but it often isn't the reason you remember it.
The memories come from the people you're with, the places you discover, and the experiences you share along the way.
Whether it's a runDisney race, a fitness competition, a baseball game, a football weekend, or a NASCAR race, these events provide opportunities to explore destinations through a different lens. They give travelers a reason to visit somewhere new while creating experiences that extend far beyond the event itself.
Looking back, I'm grateful for the opportunity to attend this NASCAR weekend. It allowed me to achieve two goals that were important to me, introduced me to a new travel experience, and reminded me why I love exploring new places.
Most importantly, it reminded me that the best trips aren't always about where you go.
They're about who you're with and the memories you create together.
